It regards the difficulty that William Samuel Johnson, a signer of the U. S. Constitution, had in getting funds from Connecticut to represent the state at the Second Continental Congress. A rare letter that gives insight into the political situation of the United States before the passage of the Constitution! Autograph letter signed "Mattw. Griswold" as Governor of Connecticut. 2 pages, 7½x9¼, 1 sheet folded, front and verso, docketed on verso. Lyme, Connecticut, Dec. 3, 1785. Addressed to Ezekiel Williams, Esq. In full: "Sir A few Days since I Recd. A letter from the Secretary of Congress Informing that Some ver Important Matters Depending in Congress and Urging in the Most Pressing Terms that the De-legates forthwith attend the Congress - By last Post I Recd. A letter from Dr Johnson (who is one of our Delegates) Informing that he is [illegible] for [illegible] of money to bear his Expenses - That he has Sent his order to the Treasurer who has Returnd. [sic] it without paying one farthing [illegible] it: - What the Event of the want of a full Re-presentation of this State will be know not - but Dread the Consequences as Dangerous & Threating [sic] to the State - If I had the money of own at Command I would advance it Immediately but I have it not -: I See no way to supply the present Emer-gency: but from the Shirriffs [sic] & Something from the Naval office: Ifthe Six Sherriffs [sic] coud. [sic] furnish but a little More than £20: Each the Residue might probably be had from the Naval office That part from the Shirriffs [sic] upon an [illegible] could not Amount to Fifty Shillings for Each [illegible] which could not Distress the People to Raise so Small a Sum - You will: Therefore immediately give Notice to the respective...
